Commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability
Galería Canalejas, as an integral part of the Centro Canalejas Madrid project, forms part of OHLA’s sustainable construction strategy (ohla-group.com). This commitment to sustainability led to the pursuit of an internationally recognised energy rating such as LEED certification, resulting in the award of LEED Gold.
LEED® certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the US Green Building Council, is a method for assessing green and sustainable buildings that involves the implementation of strategies aimed at sustainability, such as energy efficiency, the use of alternative energy sources, the improvement of indoor environmental quality (geothermal energy), water efficiency, the sustainable development of open spaces on the site, wastewater treatment and the selection of locally sourced materials to reduce the carbon footprint.
The LEED® sustainable building rating system is a voluntary environmental assessment and certification scheme based on criteria for the development of highly efficient sustainable buildings. Among the various LEED certification schemes, Galería Canalejas has followed LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED-NC), which is designed for new-build buildings or major refurbishments.
This system provides a comprehensive framework for assessing a building’s energy efficiency. To this end, it takes into account the application of sustainability criteria throughout the architectural design and technical systems planning phases, as well as during the construction, commissioning and operational phases of the building.
The aim of the certification is to promote the use of strategies that lead to an overall improvement in the environmental impact of the construction industry.
