EXPERIENCE 2: CLOSED DOOR TOUR
TRACES - FROM PAINTING TO PRINTMAKING - ROYAL ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS OF SAN FERNANDO & CANALEJAS GALLERY
The Calcografía Nacional (National Engraving Center) of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San de San Fernando and Galería Canalejas offer a unique encounter where culture, heritage, and gastronomy merge to reveal some iconic spaces that are only accessible through this exclusive experience.
The experience will begin with a private, closed-door visit to Francisco de Goya’s Cabinet. It will be led by an expert in graphic art, who will showcase the collection of original plates engraved by Goya, unveiling the key aspects of his creative process and the complex meaning behind his images.
The visit will continue with the opening of the vault where nearly 10,000 plates of the Calcografía Nacional (National Engraving Center) are preserved—the largest collection of copper-plate engravings of Spanish prints in the world. Due to conservation and security reasons, the plate archive is never shown, making this part of the experience truly unique.
In the workshop, the procedures and technical details of copper-plate engraving will be described through a live demonstration. This is the highlight of the experience: witnessing the moment a piece of art is created, the birth of an original print.
To commemorate the workshop experience, you will receive an original engraving from the historical collections of the Calcografía Nacional. Specifically, a print engraved by Joaquim Pi i Margall (1831-1891) based on designs by the neoclassical sculptor John Flaxman (1755-1826).
We will continue the visit by discovering the transformation of the “Centro Canalejas Madrid” complex and conclude the experience with a tasting menu at the iconic St. James rice restaurant, one of the best places in the capital to enjoy this classic of Spanish gastronomy.
Includes:
Private closed-door tour at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando + Dinner at St. James.
