Dark Side of the Moon Watch - OMEGA Speedmaster

Dark Side of the Moon: Apollo 8 via OMEGA

29 January 2024

In 1968, Apollo 8 marked a historic milestone as the first human flight to orbit the Moon. On this mission, each astronaut wore an OMEGA Speedmaster, confirming NASA's confidence in this instrument throughout the lunar programme.

Now, OMEGA celebrates this legacy with the launch of the new Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, a timepiece which fuses advanced technology, high-quality materials and exceptional craftsmanship.

The OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon is not just a watch, it is a tribute to one of the most breathtaking feats of space exploration. Inspired by the historic flight of Apollo 8, the first human flight to orbit the moon, this timepiece symbolises the bold and pioneering spirit of space adventure through a design that reflects the majesty and mystery of outer space, and technology that represents the pinnacle of watchmaking.

The Dark Side of the Moon Calibre 3869: a lunar masterpiece in motion

The OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon houses the breathtaking calibre 3869 movement, a masterpiece of watchmaking which features a detailed lunar relief, meticulously laser-engraved on a darkened plate.

This movement, like the moon, reveals two faces: one representing the lunar surface as we see it from Earth and the other evoking the mysterious hidden side, accessible only to the eyes of astronauts. The updated design masterfully accentuates the lunar texture, achieving a play of contrasts and fine details with wheels adorned in shades of light grey and a steering wheel elegantly clad in dark grey gold.

Exceptional Design and Features

In addition to its hand-wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon stands out for its black anodised aluminium skeleton dial, visible through the crystal. The 44.25 mm case, polished bezel and caseback are made of black ceramic, and the tachymeter scale is filled with white "Grand Feu" enamel. The chronograph features a central seconds hand in yellow, continuing this colour scheme on the black rubber perforated bracelet with yellow interior.

The Apollo 8 rocket, immortalised in the heart of Dark Side of the Moon

The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon also features a small seconds hand at the 9 o'clock position, designed in the shape of NASA's iconic Saturn V rocket, crafted in high-quality grade 5 titanium and adorned with white varnish details and a laser-blackened finish. On the back of the case, historic words by command module pilot Jim Lovell were engraved, creating a link to the Apollo programme and space exploration.

The OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon is a symbol of human curiosity, innovation and courage. By wearing it, one connects not only with Apollo 8 and the history of lunar exploration, but also with the spirit of adventure and discovery that continues to propel humanity into new frontiers.
