Galería Canalejas

May 13th, 2024

Last week, Galería Canalejas had the pleasure of celebrating alongside Vogue the Madrilenian festivity of San Isidro. It was an exciting night that drew numerous attendees eager to immerse themselves in Madrid's festive atmosphere.

From Mantones de Manila to roquillas and barquillos. Galería Canalejas Café was filled with color and joy to honor the city's rich tradition and its traditional “castizo” spirit.

May in Madrid is equal to celebration, especially on the 15th, when the city's patron, San Isidro Labrador, is honored. The streets are full of chulapos, the typical attire, and adorned with red carnations. To commemorate this festivity, we transformed our Galería Canalejas Café, located in the Central Atrium of Galería Canalejas, into a quintessential “castizo” corner, under the observant eye of our original 1940s stained glass window.

Alongside Vogue and surrounded by friends, we enjoyed a night of dance, celebration, and music. The singer Dora delighted us with a repertoire inspired by the city and its typical music, chotis, putting her spin on the famous song by Agustín Lara and Lola Flores, transporting us to the streets and the Pradera during the festivities. Later, Mike Churches took to the keyboard, and all attendees joined him in an improvised piano bar and karaoke, recreating the festive atmosphere so characteristic of these popular celebrations.

The iconic red carnations adorned the place, reminding us that May is the month of flowers and that the red carnation is Madrid's floral symbol. The traditional barquilleros, with their 19th-century tins filled with wafers, added a nostalgic touch to the evening, inviting everyone to join in the games, as is customary at Madrid's celebrations.

The typical flavors of San Isidro could not be missed: pickles, mini squid sandwiches, and, of course, the roscas, both plain and glazed. To top off the night, a delicious Cheesecake with Violetas, playing tribute to this typical candy of the city, along with the classic chocolate with churros.

Tontas and listas rosquillas.

An unforgettable evening where two fashion icons like Vogue and Galería Canalejas partnered for one reason: celebrating the traditions of the capital with style and emotion. A special occasion that merged the classic and the contemporary to remind us of the importance of preserving the cultural roots of our beloved city of Madrid and sharing them with pride.
