Throughout October, Galería Canalejas pays homage to one of Mexico’s most iconic traditions: Día de Muertos. In collaboration with ThePartners and renowned artist Wido Ramírez, we present a stunning Altar de Muertos, open for visitors until November 3. This installation is a visual and cultural celebration that brings Mexican roots to the Madrid public.
ALTAR DE MUERTOS: A TRIBUTE TO MEXICAN TRADITION
The Altar de Muertos, designed by master artisan Wido Ramírez, is a work filled with symbolism and vibrant color. It represents a bridge between Mexican and Spanish traditions, blending Día de Muertos with All Saints’ Day. The altar, decorated with characteristic elements of Mexican cartonería, offers a visual experience that evokes the cultural richness of Mexico, inviting reflection on memory, legacy, and the universality of these traditions.
Cartonería, an ancestral technique that breathes life into handcrafted figures, becomes the perfect medium to honor loved ones who are no longer with us. With its vibrant colors, offerings, and symbolic figures, the altar connects us to the beauty of Mexican tradition and the vision of death as a new beginning, offering a unique interpretation of this festive season.
GASTRONOMY TO CELEBRATE DÍA DE MUERTOS
This cultural experience is also complemented by an exclusive culinary offering inspired by Mexican tradition. Among the delicacies created for the occasion is the Catrina Cupcake, inspired by the ancestral flavors of Xocolatl—a blend of cacao and spices that arrived in Europe with Hernán Cortés. This dessert surprises with a mango and orange gelée filling, topped with pumpkin cream and white chocolate.
Alongside this sweet creation, we will offer Mexican Cocadas, small coconut and sugar bites perfect with coffee, and the Cempasúchil Margarita, the most representative cocktail of the land of catrinas, with a twist that evokes the aromas and flavors of this iconic flower of the celebration.
We invite you to discover the Altar de Muertos and enjoy a unique cultural experience at Galería Canalejas. Visit us Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 20:30, and Sundays and holidays from 12:00 to 20:00, at Plaza de Canalejas, 1, and immerse yourself in the richness of Mexican tradition in the heart of Madrid.
